We have researched some sports and activity clubs near to our clinic on the A6. This list from your friendly Lancaster Physio includes something for everyone – whatever your interest, age or level of fitness.  Staying active throughout life can have a significant effect on your health and wellbeing.  In fact, doing a sport can help prevent aches, pains and illness as well as boost your mental fitness.

Remember that if something physical is stopping you getting active, or you have already overdone it – physio and massage can really help. Our clinic is ranked as a top three Lancaster Physio; please get in touch if you would like some professional advice before joining a club or taking up a sport.

In the meantime the following should provide some inspiration for your next move!

Hockey Training with Lancaster Hockey Club

You can join and train with this club without becoming part of a team. So there is no barrier to getting involved even if weekend matches aren’t on your agenda! And if you are looking for something all together less “pacey”, they run walking hockey sessions. On the other hand if representing the club sounds like something you would like to do, then you can try out for selection for one of four teams that exist for both ladies and gents. Alongside the regular Tuesday night training that takes place at Lancaster Cricket Club, there is an active social programme. Get in touch with the club here.

Crown Green Bowls

You will find one of the oldest Crown green bowling clubs in the region at Lancaster Cricket & Sports Club. The members of the club compete with success in local bowling leagues. There are more then fifty playing members, so if you fancy having a go there will be plenty of moral support. Don’t worry if you have never played, you can get in touch and ask about taking up the sport from scratch! Bowls is a great way to keep active and make new friends, especially if more vigorous sports aren’t your thing.

Lancaster Cycling Club

This local cycling club has a buoyant Facebook page that gives you a good idea of how active and busy they are.  Through the Summer they run regular time trials, members are expected to muck in from time to time and man the sign-on desk or marshall. There are nearly 800 of them chatting and sharing updates on Facebook so that could be good place to reach out to them.

City of Lancaster Triathlon

The COLT Website gives the impression they are not for the lighthearted, and would you expect anything less from a triathlon club? They offer the following advice on their website:

Training with others is the best way to make progress in triathlon.

COLT welcomes athletes of all abilities to the regular swim, bike and run training sessions. Perks of joining include free try out on club trial bikes and complimentary rigid bike box hire. Ask any questions using the form here.

What Position Are You?

The UK’s largest social netball league provider has a base in Lancaster. Matches take place on Tuesdays at Our Lady’s Catholic College on Morecambe Road.  One of the questions they regularly get asked is:

I haven’t played since school and don’t remember the rules, can I still join?

The good news is that most of the players were in that exact position when they started, so the friendly umpires and your team members will help you pick it back up in no time. If you are undecided about being a goal shooter or a wing defence, then take the “What Position” quiz.

Dancing Into Retirement

If you, or somebody you know, is over the age of 55 and needs to get our more, don’t let the Friendship Centre pass you by. We mention it here because they run regularly weekly sessions in sequence and line dancing. If you feel that might be too much, there is also a regular session of gentle exercise for balance and mobility. This is a great community resource, offering a way to make new friends and stay active. Find full details about the charity here or phone 07821 328342 to get started.

Back To School

Badminton is a great sport, all year round as most courts in the UK are indoors. Regular play can develop your stamina, agility and strength, but you don’t have to be an expert to get started.  Sunnyside Badminton runs regular sessions at Lancaster Grammar.  You can play on Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm, and it.  If you are interested Helen would be pleased to hear from you on 07812509287 or email helenkbyrne@yahoo.co.uk.

You can find the True Physio Lancaster clinic on the A6 not far from the Hospital. We are on the main route to the University, and students can grab 10% discount on services all year round.  Parking is easy at the front of the clinic and in nearby roads; the ground floor reception and treatments rooms are fully accessible.  The Lancaster Physio clinic occupies two levels with rooms and studios offering physio, massage, chiropody and Pilates.
